There are different types and levels of Sedation Dentistry. These depend on the type of dental treatment the patient requires and the severity of the anxiety.

The beauty of Sedation Dentistry is that it enables the patient, who may have avoided the dentist altogether, to receive the treatment they require and to achieve a healthy smile.

There are three main types of sedation.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Also known as laughing gas, this sedation is inhaled. It will induce a relaxing feeling and send you into a dream-like state. A local anesthetic will be used in conjunction to provide pain relief.

Oral Sedatives
The technique of Oral Sedation begins about an hour prior to your dental appointment. A sedative pill is administered to the patient and after a short period of time you will then become very relaxed. Dependent on your needs your Oral Sedation can last between 2 and 6 hours. To ensure your safety, please organize a companion to bring and take you from the practice. As oral sedatives are not pain relievers, a local anesthetic will also be used.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation
Intravenous (I.V.) Sedation is the administration of tranquilizer medication into a patient’s vein. Compatible for the majority of patients, I.V. Sedation enables even the most anxious of people to undergo dental treatment. The sedatives administered, create strong feelings of relaxation and comfort. During your dental treatment you will not experience any pain or discomfort. When you have awoken after the procedure, you will have no memory of the treatment. As with Oral Sedation, a local anesthetic will be used for pain relief.
